Recent history shows that many Super Bowl teams don’t tend to make it back to the playoffs the following year. Since 1999, 10 defending conference champions (and therefore Super Bowl teams) have missed the playoffs. They were the 99 Broncos and Falcons, 01 Giants, 02 Patriots and Rams, 03 Buccaneers and Raiders, 04 Panthers, 05 Eagles, and 06 Steelers. Among the other Super Bowl teams, the 2000 Rams, 2001 Ravens, 2005 Patriots, and 2006 Seahawks suffered injuries to major players and weren’t the same as a result. The 2000 Titans were eliminated in their first playoff game. The only team to repeat was the 2004 Patriots.

The odds are against the Colts and Bears this season, if you look at recent history. The Colts and Bears defenses looked pretty weak for a large part of last season and the Bears starting QB looked pretty bad at times as well.
Do either of these teams even make it back to the playoffs this season?
