Top 10 Most Disappointing Nfl Teams in 2008 Season

Seth Taylor asked:

The year 2008 in the NFL was a year of big surprises and disappointments. We saw history made, major fall offs and plenty of coaches fired. Here are the most disappointing teams in 2008.

10. Cleveland Browns

The Clevland Browns finished the season at 10-6 last year. There were plenty of high hopes in Cleveland. The dogs were starting to think that things were looking up. Well now, not so much. They finished the season at 4-12, fired their head coach and hired another head coach, Eric Mangini, that just got fired from the Jets.

9. Washington Redskins

The expectations for the Redskins were not very high this year. They just hired a new unproven head coach in Jim Zorn bringing in a new offense with the verdict still out on their quarterback Jason Campbell. Most people were expecting them to finish where they did, 8-8 at the bottom of the toughest division in the NFL, the NFC East.

So why is this team on this list. They started the season at 6-2 with some tough road wins against Philly and Dallas. Then they went on to lose 6 of their last eight games. Not good. Especially in Washington.

8. Green Bay Packers

The good news is that the Brett Favre saga is finally over. The bad news is that so were the Packers winning ways this season. Aaron Rogers appeared to have done his part with a 93.8 QB rating. But what about the intangibles?

Does Aaron Rogers have the leadership skills and fire that Brett possessed during his time at Green Bay to lead this team? Only time will tell in say about 16 more years.

7. Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have been a given to make the playoffs with 5 consecutive playoff appearances. Now they finished the season at 4-12 as one of the worst teams in football. What a disappointing way for Mike Holmgren to finish his NFL coaching career. Now they have a new head coach in which they have to adjust to hopefully right the ship.

6. Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos started the season hot at 3-1 with one of the best offenses in the league. They lost 3 straight down the stretch putting them out of position to make the playoffs finishing the season at 8-8. As a result of their poor season the Broncos fired the face of the franchise, Mike Shanahan after 14 seasons and 2 Super Bowls. Talk about a disappointing season.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucaneers start the season at 9-3 and were already penciled in for a playoff position. That is until they lose the next four games straight with the last 2 games at home. The last game they lost was against the Oakland Raiders, of all teams, who finished the season at 5-11. Now it looks like Jon Gruden is on the hot seat - again.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville was considered one of the top 5 teams in the league coming into the 2008 season. They were ranked 5 in the ESPN power rankings. They finished with an 11-5 record last year and made it to the second round of the playoffs.

This year they decided to do a complete turnaround and finished with a 5-11 record. Now they have to deal with poor free agent signings from the past, salary cap issues, and have decided to start building through the NFL draft.

3. New York Jets

There was new life in New York and I am not talking about for the New York Giants. I am talking about the other New York, the Jets. They made a huge splash signing the future hall of fame quarterback Brett Favre. The Jets got off to a hot start at 8-3.

Talk of an all New York Super Bowl began with the Jets versus the Giants. The New York Brets were alive and kicking. But the season was not over and the Jets lost 4 of their next 5 games with Brett Favre throwing 9 interceptions over this period. Oh, and then they fired their head coach!

2. Detroit Lions

Detroit finished the season with a perfect season. Sort of like the Dolphins 72 season in reverse, 0-16. They went down in the history books as the only team every to go 0-16. Sure, no one expected much from this team but to go all year and not win 1 game. One? Man. It sure ***** to be a Lions fan these days.

1. Dallas Cowboys

And then there was one. The one and only. America’s team! The Dallas Cowboys were many people’s preseason favorite to win the Super Bowl. This team finished the 2007 season with a record of 13-3 with one of the losses being a meaningless game on the last game of the season. Their team is stacked with superstars on both sides of the ball.

Yeah, but when you have a bunch of head cases on your team like T.O. and Pacman Jones you are sure to have some problems. I used to always defend Terrell Owens and try to give him the benefit of the doubt. But if you destroy the locker room chemistry at every team that you go to then maybe you have some issues that you need to address. The problems with Terrell Owens complaining about not getting the ball and the Pacman Jones distractions were just too much for this team.

Not to mention Wade Phillips is probably not the right coach for a place like Dallas. Someone a little more hard-nosed, similar to Parcells or Cowher, is needed in big D. To go from the Super Bowl favorite to not even making the playoffs. And not only did they not make the playoffs, they got destroyed by Philadelphia in the last game of the season (44-6) when they had everything to play for. Now that is what I call a disappointing season.

Washington Redskins Tickets Available

Jeff asked:

Based in the Washington, DC area — the Redskins are a professional football team which was established back in 1932, 1933 they started playing as part of the Eastern division a venture which extended until 1949, from 1950 to 1952 they were part of the American conference, from 1953 to 1969 they played under the Eastern conference and most recently from 1970 until today they have been part of the national football conference East division.  Their home-field is a FedEx Stadium, the team owner is Dan Snyder, and the head coach is Jim Zorn.

Championships and important moments:

The Washington Redskins has been a historic team which has had a great deal of accomplishments, they have been conference champions in five different occasions (1972, 1982, 1983, 1987 and 1991), they have been six-time champions in both the NFL and the NFC East divisions in years that span from 1936 all the way to 1999.  To complement their success they have also been NFL champions twice (1937 in 1942) and three-time Super Bowl champions, and the 1982 season they defeated the Miami Dolphins by a score of 27 to 17, in the 1987 season the crushed the Denver Broncos 42 to 10 and during the 1991 season they came out victorious after defeating the Buffalo Bills by a score of 37 to 24.

Quarterbacks in the current roster:

– Derek Devine

– Colt Brennan

– Todd Collins

– Jason Campbell

Washington Redskins current news:

With a completely unique training style head coach of the Redskins Jim Zorn is expected to help the quarterbacks improve their abilities under constant attack and tough situations, the recent drills he has been seen throwing big bags at the quarterbacks in order to simulate a scenario where a player of the opposite team gets to tackle quarterback.  The team has high expectations of the new quarterback Jason Campbell but it is highly confident on the overall performance of the team and individual records achieved by their players such as Chris Cooley a player who has for the first time in NFL history with at least six touchdowns receptions in each of his first four seasons.

Unfortunately for Cooley who got married in May 23, his honeymoon was cut short (according to the player) and he is back training with the rest of the team in order to be in top shape for the 2008 season which is quickly approaching.

Buy, Watch Or Pass - Week 11

Alex The Great asked:

Buy, Watch or Pass

Every week, I will examine some of the more obscure top performers in Fantasy Football. Here are the names I came across in Week 11:

QB’s

J.P. Losman, Buffalo Bills 340 pass yds, 3 TD’s, 1 INT
J.P. Losman came out of left field on Sunday, throwing for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns, including two 83 yard bombs to Lee Evans in the 1st quarter. It was the best game in the career of the young QB, but it did come against a very porous Houston Texans team. The rest of the schedule is much tougher outside of a couple games, so most likely this will be the last time we’ll see a game like this out of him this season. Don’t put too much stock into this performance. PASS

Jason Campbell, Washington Redskins 196 pass yds, 2 TD’s

Washington finally benched Mark Brunell and put in their 2005 first round pick Jason Campbell. Campbell performed well, throwing for 196 yards & 2 touchdowns while completing 56% of his passes. It was a nice start for the young QB, but it wasn’t an eye opener either. When the fantasy playoffs come around he has some incredible matchups versus the likes of New Orleans & New York Giants, so if he improves then he could prove useful during that time. His next couple games will be against some tougher secondaries which will prove his worth. I’ll need to see more of those games before I put him on my roster. PASS

RB’s

Mike Bell, Denver Broncos 90 rush yds, 2 TD’s

Tatum Bell was inactive with turf toe, so Mike Bell took his place and played a good game against a very tough San Diego run defense. Obviously any Denver running back is worth a roster spot, but Shanahan has been making it difficult for owners on what to do with Mike Bell. He played well versus Indianapolis, got the start versus Pittsburgh and didn’t play well, was inactive against Oakland & then started against San Diego. Turf toe is a nagging injury that can be with a player a whole season, so more starts could be on the horizon for Mike. He should be on a fantasy roster & if he’s available I’d grab him. He has value when he plays, but you definitely need to pay close attention to what Shanahan is doing up until game time, otherwise you may be left in the dust. BUY

Wali Lundy & Samkon Gado, Houston Texans Lundy: (61 rush yds, 22 rec yds, 1 TD), Gado: (69 rush yds, 30 rec yds, 1 TD)

Here’s another running back quandary for fantasy owners to get headaches about. Lundy & Gado both split carries on Sunday and both were productive versus a below average Buffalo rushing defense. Lundy is still the starter but head coach Gary Kubiak said that he has been wanting to split the carries between the two and seems to have finally lived up to his word. Houston has so many favorable matchups versus run defenses that either of these two could make a difference down the stretch. Unfortunately we don’t have access to Houston’s game plans so choosing which one to start is just like flipping a coin. If you own either of these 2 keep them on the bench until this situation straightens itself out. WATCH

DeAngelo Williams, Carolina Panthers 114 rush yds

DeShaun Foster went out with an injury (again) and DeAngelo Williams stepped in with a 114 rushing yards on 20 carries. Foster said that he could have returned in the second half but because Williams was so effective they didn’t want to risk anything. Foster is still the starter and will be playing this weekend. Everyone may be thinking Williams will start to steal some carries, but head coach John Fox hasn’t said anything to that effect yet so we can’t assume it’s going to happen. Foster is injury prone, which could make Williams very valuable if he goes out for an extended period of time. It’s possible the talented first round pick Williams is available in your league, so keep an eye on him and the running back situation in Carolina. WATCH

WR’s

Devery Henderson, New Orleans Saints 169 rec yds

When Marques Colston went down in the first quarter, Devery Henderson came in and the Saints offense didn’t miss a beat. He caught 9 passes for 169 yards, marking the second time in 3 weeks he’s stepped in for an injured starting receiver and played great. Henderson seems to be figuring out the game pretty well right now but he is still the number 3 receiver and will receive only limited playing time because of it. Right now Colston is day to day, so it’s not clear if he will be playing this Sunday against Atlanta. Keep a look out on how things shake out with the injuries to Marques Colston & Joe Horn in New Orleans. If either needs to be shut down, Henderson would make an excellent pickup. WATCH

Mark Bradley, Chicago Bears 80 rec yds, 1 TD

Bernard Berrian is the main deep threat in Chicago, but he’s been very ineffective ever since bruising his ribs and doesn’t appear to be completely healthy. Meanwhile, Mark Bradley is finally healthy and has been taking over Berrian’s role and has been doing it well. He hauled in a 57 yard TD in Chicago’s victory over the Jets on Sunday, making many to wonder who will starting along side Muhsin Muhammad. Berrian is still the starter at this moment, but will probably remain ineffective until those bruised ribs are completely healed. Bradley was a second round pick from last year and has the talent to take over Berrian’s role if he has to be shut down. WATCH

Reche Caldwell, New England Patriots 70 rec yds, 1 TD

While Tom Brady distributes the ball as good as anybody in the game, he is starting to develop some great rapport with Reche Caldwell. For the third time in four games, Caldwell has hauled in 70+ yards and a TD. Granted this last weekend it was against a poor Green Bay secondary, nevertheless, he’s becoming more & more impressive by the week. He has a couple games left on the schedule which you will probably not want to play him, but if you mix and match his starts, you should be rewarded. He now appears to be the primary wide receiver target in New England. BUY

Braylon Edwards, Cleveland Browns 137 rec yds

Braylon Edwards has turned things around and appears to be back on track like he was to start the year. He brought in 7 catches for 137 yards on Sunday, giving him 227 yards & 2 TD’s in his last three games. Making things even better is that the rest of his schedule is favorable for him. Besides him & Kellen Winslow, there are limited options for Cleveland, making Edwards a prime target. If he’s available, I’d snatch him up. BUY
